Did you know Columbus, Ohio, has its own style of pizza?

You’ll be able to try it now that 55-year-old, family-owned pizza franchiser Donatos Pizza has opened its Virginia Beach shop at 1833 Republic Road in the Hilltop area.

Columbus-style pizza is a thin-crust, square-cut pizza with cheese and toppings spread all the way to the edge of the pie. Similar tavern-cut pizzas exist across much of the Midwest, with variants in cities like St. Louis and Chicago. But residents of Columbus claim ownership of their own particular flavor of Midwest pie.

Donatos founder Jim Grote started selling his version in Columbus back in 1963 when he was a college sophomore, eventually franchising over 100 Donatos locations , primarily in the Appalachian states.

The fast-casual franchise already has made inroads into Virginia with locations in Vienna and Newport News, but the Hilltop location is the first in South Hampton Roads.

After trying the pizza at the Newport News location, local franchisees Ricky Singh and Jay Patel committed to opening at least three local Donatos – with potential locations in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Chesapeake. The pair previously opened Subway and Tropical Smoothie locations.

Alongside pizzas ranging from classic pepperoni to a “mariachi chicken” pie with jalapenos and spice mix, Donatos serves calzones, subs, wings and salads.
