Donatos Pizza, the Ohio-based restaurant opening three locations in Sarasota this year, plans to have its first pizzeria open within the next few weeks.

The restaurant, which specializes in pies with toppings from corner to corner — or “Edge to Edge,” as it’s branded by the restaurant — will open at 5410 Fruitville Road. The opening is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 25.

The Fruitville location will encompass 2,341 square feet and seat 58 people. It will be near Sarasota Food + Beer in the same plaza as Target and Dollar Tree.

The local team is headed up by Tyler Williams and Joe Maxstead. Williams is a former medical software entrepreneur who sold his business in 2018, and Maxstead has been with Donatos for 22 years.

When all three locations are open — and they’re all scheduled to be open by the end of the year — the company will employ about 100 people in the area. The Fruitville Road location alone will employ 55.

The other two Donatos locations are at 2881 Clark Road, in the same plaza as Detwiler’s Farm Market, and at 1145 S. Tamiami Trail near Woof Gang Bakery & Dog Grooming.

The company also has a pizzeria in Jacksonville Beach, and a Winter Park location is in the works.

Donatos is highly concentrated in Ohio, and Maxstead has worked for the company in Ohio and Indiana over the years. He said he is excited to bring the brand back to people who have moved away from their Donatos location.

“I could not imagine spending the rest of my life without one near me. I had to find a way to bring my favorite pizza to my favorite place,” he said.

At Donatos, customers can order pizzas, subs, salads, calzones, desserts and more. Company spokesman Dave Parsons said the company is known for its pepperoni pizza on thin crust with 100 slices of pepperoni from edge to edge. Pizzas also include the founder’s favorite, which has pepperoni, sausage, shaved ham, banana peppers and provolone and Romano cheeses.
